Improve Your Business by Hiring Older People

Promoting equality and diversity in your workforce can be a great way to make your business a more welcoming place for all of your employees, as well as potentially bringing in a wide range of new customers. One way to diversify your company's employees can be to bring in older workers. With the ever increasing older population, an age diverse workforce will better represent the marketplace and so your company will benefit from this.

The experience which older workers possess is probably their biggest asset. Referring not only to experience in a particular profession but also life in general. Older employees may be able to suggest improvements which can be made to the business operation, through experience and knowledge gained throughout their career. Additionally, older workers can draw on their lifelong experience with interpersonal relations in order to calmly and efficiently handle various crisis situations that may come up, including everything from disgruntled customers to conflicts between other employees. Older employees also tend to take well to leading teams of employees. Experience in dealing with a greater variety of situations may give older employees more confidence over their younger counterparts.

Another advantage of older workers is generally their reliability. Older workers have been found by many employers to exhibit conscientious time-keeping skills, and have been found to be relatively flexible when scheduling their work hours to account for holidays, business deadlines, and the schedules of their co-workers.

Older employees general take pride in their work and are careful. Sometimes, older workers can be good role models for younger employees and inspire them to not take unnecessary days off, be conscious of other team members and stay on task. Older workers have also been found to have among the lowest rates of absenteeism of any cohort of workers, which can have a direct, tangible, and immediate impact on a business's "bottom line."

At the same time as benefiting your business, promoting equality and diversity is good practice. Next time its time to recruit new staff, your business should take into account those older people who are looking for new work opportunities. You will gain recognition from both your employees and your customers for diversifying your workforce.
